Qantas to link Las Vegas and Sydney with the world’s only nonstop flight

Australian airline Qantas has announced the launch of seasonal nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Sydney. No other carrier in the world offers a nonstop link between the entertainment capital and Australia, making the new route unique on the global air-travel map.

New route from Harry Reid International Airport

Flights will operate from Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas’s main gateway airport, with arrival in Sydney. This is a seasonal service designed for the peak demand period among Australian travelers, when winter in the Northern Hemisphere coincides with the height of the summer holiday season back home.

The new destination aligns with Qantas’s strategy to expand nonstop links with cities passengers want to visit at specific times of year. Las Vegas airport has been ramping up international passenger traffic in recent years, and the arrival of the Australian carrier strengthens this trend.

Seasonal service details

Key details of the new service include:

  • The first flight is scheduled for 29 December.
  • Flights will operate through 12 March of the following year.
  • Departure days: Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.
  • Bookings are now open.
  • Estimated flight time is just under 14 hours.

According to the airline, avoiding a connection via another U.S. city allows passengers to save up to five hours compared with itineraries that require a connection. On a journey of more than 12,000 km, that’s a meaningful difference.

Seasonal routes: a proven approach

Australians’ demand for international travel, according to Qantas, remains extremely high. The airline has already trialed the seasonal-flight model on other routes, and the results were compelling. Routes to Rome and Japan’s Sapporo demonstrated genuine passenger interest in nonstop flights timed to specific seasons. It was this experience that underpinned the decision to launch the Las Vegas–Sydney service.

In a company press release, Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace is quoted as saying: “Australians’ appetite for international travel continues to be incredibly strong. Rome and Sapporo have shown us that there is real demand for seasonal services to destinations people want to visit at specific times of year, and we continue to expand these nonstop connections around the world.”

Las Vegas seeks to attract tourists worldwide in an era dominated by online entertainment

Las Vegas is one of the most popular cities in the Americas for international tourism. It draws visitors from Mexico and Canada, as well as from European and African countries. For Australians, it is also a sought-after destination, despite the growing popularity of online casinos in the country.

It is worth noting that this has already had a negative impact on attendance at land-based casinos. A recent report on a decline in Canadian visitor numbers is one example, as residents of that country are increasingly playing online. Information on the official website twinspinca.com, which includes a review of promo codes for bonuses at Canadian online casinos, supported this. These trends are not limited to Canada; they are playing out in most other countries as well.

Still, Las Vegas businesses remain undeterred. Working with local authorities, they are trying to make the city more appealing to a wide range of visitor segments. In this way, they seek to offset the decline in visits to land-based casinos, which previously served as the main engine of the city’s economy.

101st destination and its eighth city in the Americas

With the launch of the new route, Las Vegas will become Qantas’s eighth city in North and South America and its 101st destination in the carrier’s overall route network. The figure looks symbolic: the 100-destination milestone was reached only recently, and the pace of network expansion is not slowing.

What the new flight means for the gambling capital

Las Vegas Convention and Tourism Authority chief Steve Hill noted that Australia consistently ranks as the city’s second-largest international source market. The nonstop service could further strengthen this visitor flow by removing the barrier of a mandatory connection, which previously lengthened the journey and reduced the route’s appeal.

The new service was announced in an official Qantas press release and also reported by Las Vegas local TV station KSNV.
