BBA completes acquisition of Landmark Av

On Feb 5, BBA Aviation completed the acquisition of Houston TX-based Landmark Av which counted 68 locations among its FBO network. Though recent history, few recall that the sale of Landmark to BBA marks the 2nd sale of the FBO chain by the Carlyle Group, that purchased Landmark back from Chicago's GTCR LLC and Houston-based Platform Partners LLC in 2012. Carlyle originally owned Landmark once before, prior to selling it to Dubai Aerospace Enterprise in 2007, which in turn spun it off to GTCR/Platform in 2007 for a reported $436M. Having grown substantially since that time, BBA's purchase of Landmark is reported to have cost $2.065B and includes the charter and MRO assets of now-former Landmark.

New EMB Legacy 500 for Jackie Chan. Embraer delivered its midsize Legacy 500 to existing customer and Embraer's product ambassador in China, movie star Jackie Chan. For Chan, known for his karate mastery and humor in popular movies such as Rush Hour, delivery marks his 2nd Embraer aircraft—the 1st being a Legacy 650 delivered in 2012.
 
Airbus H160 flies with 2 Turbomeca Arrano engines. Milestone 1st flight of the latest in the Turbomeca series of helicopter engines, the Arrano delivers the power for the Airbus Helicopters H160.  The Arrano delivers 1100-1300 shaft horsepower, and recent data suggests a reduction in fuel consumption of between 10-15% in comparison to other engines of similar horsepower. 
 

Jet Aviation to offer FBO and mx services at VNY Airport (Van Nuys CA). They will have a 30-yr lease for the north side of the field which currently has no other FBOs. It's anticipated there will be a $40 million infrastructure investment made, to include a maintenance facility managed by sister company Gulfstream. Partnership will bring 200 new jobs and an estimated $89 million in economic impact to the area.

 

Duncan completes integrated CPDLC/FANS 1/A+ installation in Challenger 601, receives STC. Lincoln NE-based Duncan recently completed the installation in a Challenger 601 of a CPDLC/FANS 1/A+, using a Honeywell NZ-2000 FMS. The installation is integrated into the existing OEM Challenger 601 flightdeck, and is “forward-fit compatible” with future mandates, such as ADS-B In.

 

Sheltair selects construction, engineering firms for FRG project.
With plans to replace an aging facility that once saw the manufacturing and production of the Republic P47 Thunderbolt, Sheltair has selected AECOM and BDG Construction as engineering and construction firms for their latest FBO development project at FRG (Farmingdale NY) respectively. New facility is slated to include some 210,000 sq ft of modern hangar space.  Groundbreaking is expected in early fall.

Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion retrofit for King Air 350. Rockwell Collins has announced that owners of King Air 350s equipped with Pro Line II avionics can upgrade to the Pro Line Fusion suite via their recently received STC. The upgrade is available through authorized dealers.

 

Satcom Direct, XTAR partner on military ISR. Satcom Direct has partnered with XTAR, an X band satellite operator, to offer military and government operators an on-demand X-band service to airborne beyond Line of Sight (LOS) and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The move is designed to augment the government’s WGS-X band constellation.

 

CHC helicopters to fly in Oman.  CHC (Canadian Helicopters Corp) has announced a bold plan to create bases of operations in the Sultanate of Oman. Aimed at passenger transportation to industrial zones, medevac and tourism flights, CHC has eventual plans to recruit and train Omanis as pilots within 2 to 3 years following intial commencement of operations in Oman.

 

MAC Air adds FBO services and joins Avfuel network. Family-owned business Maine Aviation Corp (MAC Air) is entering the FBO business as MAC Jets and will be located as the only facility on the south side of PWM (Portland ME). Already a charter/mgmt and MRO svcs company, they will build a new 43,000 sq ft facility for the FBO.  Avfuel has done business with Mac Air Group for 9 years as the contract fuel supplier for its charter group.  

 

New King Air 350i available for charter in Seattle. Business Air, a Denton, TX-based aircraft charter, management and FBO, has added a new King Air 350i to its charter fleet in Seattle. This complements a King Air 250 that was added in 2015.

 

Aerodynamically cleaner PC12NG goes faster, further, and climbs better. Proving little changes go a long way, Pilatus announced the newest NG version of its ever-popular PC12 now flies faster, further and has improved climb performance- at reduced fuel consumption and the same power. The changes are due to a performance improvement package which aerodynamically cleaned up areas such as flap track fairings, door handles, and relocated antennae to take advantage of localized airflow. Additional, more noticeable changes in the 2016 PC12NG, include a new Hartzell 5 bladed composite prop.

 

Air Methods takes delivery of Bell 407GXP. First delivery of a 407GXP goes to Air Methods. Equipped with a United Rotorcraft EMS interior, this is the initial delivery of several 407GXPs slated to go to the Englewood CO-based EMS provider.

 

Key Air off to a strong start in 2016, expands offerings.  Key Air, an a/ct charter and mgmt company, has added 3 new aircraft to its mgmt fleet in January, including a Bombardier Global 5000 Vision, a Gulfstream IVSP and a Lear 45XR. Key Air has also expanded its offerings to existing and future clientele via an in house aircraft sales group.

 

A flat area near Picabo ID was the site of thousands of snowballs made without human hands. It's a rare wx phenomenon called spontaneous snowballs. It requires a frozen layer of snow as a base—a couple of inches of snow with just the right water density along with temperatures near freezing—followed by strong and steady winds.

Keith Crowley is named VP of Digital Av for Boeing and CEO of Jeppesen, succeeding 35-year vet Mark Van Tine who is stepping down June 30. Crowley joined Boeing in 1989 as a software engineer and has held various leadership positions over his tenure.

Dean Atchison has been appointed to serve on the North Dakota District Export Council (DEC) by U S Sec of Commerce. Atchison is owner of Spectrum Aeromed. Council is a composed of volunteer leaders who are knowledgeable about intl trade and share their expertise with local firms.

Scott Helms is now GM of Million Air HOU. Helms previously served as customer service manager for Landmark BFI and line service sales mgr for Galvin Flying Services BFI.

 

WESTERN DEPARTURES

Jeff Pino and Nickolas Tramontano were killed in the crash of Pino's P51D Mustang on Feb 5. Accident happened in Maricopa AZ, 35 miles south of Phoenix. Cause is under investigation. Pino most rccently was the working with a team on the XTI TriFan 60 ducted fan VTOL. Tramontano was affetionately known as the "mayor of Oxford Airport" where he did most of his flying. A pilot friend said Tramontano was an airplane man his entire life. He was retired after a 33-yr airline career, owned multiple vintage a/c and logged over 26,000 ft hrs.

 
Before winter is gone try a night at the IceHotel in Jukkasjärvi Sweden. At the end of Nov the hotel is built on the banks of the Torne River by about 100 artisans and is open from Dec 11th to Apr 15th. Universal Weather says the closest general av airport is Kiruna (ESNQ) Airport. It's a point of entry facility with 8209 ft runway. Operating hours are 0545-2330 LT Mon—Fri. 0820-1345 LT Sat. 1200-2330 LT Sun. Overtime available upon request.
